How Do EGRs and DPFs Work?
EGR systems, or exhaust gas recirculation systems, work by recirculating a portion of the engine's exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber, reducing the amount of oxygen available for combustion and lowering peak combustion temperatures. The EGR system includes the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and EGR control solenoid.
DPFs capture and trap soot and other harmful emissions to prevent them from being released into the environment. Roughly every 300 miles, the engine management system initiates a regeneration process to burn off the trapped particles and keep the filter working effectively.
Stuck EGR Valves
Stuck EGR valves can cause significant performance problems in a heavy-duty truck. Over time, your EGR valve can get stuck open, shooting significantly more exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber. This will drop the temperature in your combustion chamber, leading to extensive engine damage if left unrepaired. Clogged DPFs
